For the pastry, you will need:

  • 150g butter
  • 50g powdered sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 40g almond powder
  • 250g all-purpose flour

Beat the butter and powdered sugar together, then add the egg yolk, almond powder (if you don't have almond powder, you can grind almonds in a blender), and finally the flour. Mix until you have a beautiful elastic dough. Let it rest and chill wrapped in plastic wrap for half an hour. Later, roll out the pastry and place it in a tart pan, making small holes with a fork. Pre-bake the tart shell with weights (such as beans or rice) for about 20 minutes, then remove the weights and continue baking for another 10 minutes until it turns golden brown.

For the filling, you will need:

  • 250g milk
  • 1 egg
  • 70g sugar
  • 25g butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered mastic from Chios

Directions

In a saucepan, combine 200g of milk, sugar, and mastic. Separately, whisk the remaining 50g of milk with cornstarch and the egg. Incorporate this mixture into the saucepan before the milk mixture starts boiling. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Pour the cream into the baked tart shell and let it cool.

For the whipped cream topping, whip 200g of plant-based cream with a few drops of mastic liqueur.

Finish off your mastic tart by spreading the whipped cream on top. You can garnish it with crushed mastic tears from Chios for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal.

Indulge in this captivating and delightful mastic tart that will transport you to the enchanting island of Chios with every bite. Get ready to savor the unique aromas and flavors that make this tart truly extraordinary. Enjoy!
